With an English release of the manga Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You underway since 2024, we learned in July 2025 that an anime adaptation is in the works. With a July 2026 debut set previously, Crunchyroll picked up the show for streaming, where it’ll be available to viewers in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and India.
The series has Tadato Suzuki directing it with Aoi Mori. Mio Inoue is handling the scripts with character designs by Yasuka Otaki. Asahi Production is on the animation production.
The series saw some early streaming last week, where the first half of the series was done as twelve “minisodes” that we’re ignoring, and the broadcast version is set for a July 9th, 2026, debut – which is what we’ll be covering in review. With that coming up, the production has now brought out a new TV spot to highlight its broadcast on TBS in Japan.
The previously announced Japanese cast includes:
- Takuya Sato as Sasaki
- Seena Hoshiki as Yamada / Tamaya
- Shinya Takahashi as Suzuki
- Toa Yukinari as Gotō
- Megumi Toyoguchi as Ōno
- Rikuya Yasuda as Obata
- Yōko Hikasa as Maezawa
The series features the opening theme song by ZUTOMAYO while the ending theme song is “Fiction” by imase.
The property comes from creator Jinushi, which began serialization in 2022 in Big Gangan magazine. Known originally as Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari, it has seven volumes out in Japan so far and is listed as ongoing.

Plot Concept: Meet Sasaki, an overworked, middle-aged office worker. His days are marked only by the passing of more unrewarding corporate drudgery. Smoking helps take the edge off, but other than that, the only bright spot of his day is when he goes to the nearby supermarket and sees Yamada’s smiling face. So, one evening after yet another exhausting day, he heads to the supermarket to find he missed Yamada’s shift. Dejected, he decides to go find a smoking area but discovers there isn’t one to be found. Just as he’s about to leave, a girl in a biker jacket named Tayama asks him to join her at a secret smoking area!
