One of the most iconic DC Comics artists of all time is getting the spotlight he deserves. DC today announced that, at long last, the artwork of José Luis García-López will be presented in the Artist’s Edition format. Due out in March of next year, José Luis García-López’s DC Classics Artist’s Edition will feature the Maestro’s artwork at its original 12″ x 17″ size, with color scans of the original artwork showing off the intricate detail and process behind García-López’s work.
Here’s how DC describes José Luis García-López’s DC Classics Artist’s Edition:
José Luis García-López’s DC Classics Artist’s Edition features seven complete stories, including Batman, Jonah Hex, Cinder and Ashe, and others, along with a curated selection of covers, pages, and rare pieces from across the artist’s extraordinary career. Many pages are inked by García-López himself, offering an intimate look at his process and evolution.
Although the artwork appears in black and white, each page has been scanned in full color to capture every nuance of the original boards, showcasing the blue pencil, ink gradients, white-out corrections, margin notes, and all the subtle textures that make original art so compelling. Printed at the full 12″ x 17″ size of the original pages, this volume offers the closest possible experience to holding the art in your hands.
The hardcover edition will be published by Skybound, in partnership with Scott Dunbier’s Act 4 Publishing, with the collection being curated by Dunbier. DC and Act 4 have previously released Artist’s Editions for icons including Jim Aparo and David Mazzuchelli. A volume collecting original New Teen Titans artwork by George Pérez is due out next month.
An artist’s edition of García-López DC artwork was previously announced back in 2023, when IDW was still in the business of publishing those books. That book has been absent from Act 4’s schedule until now. Since then DC has teamed with publisher Standards Manual to release the 1982 DC Comics Style Guide, which features marketing and licensing work primarily by García-López.
