SAO PAULO, Brazil — Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, an American art-world commentator and social media satirist known for her widely followed “Jerry Gogosian” persona, has died at 40 after being found unresponsive in a hotel room in São Paulo, Brazil.
Helphenstein was discovered Sunday in a room at the Rosewood São Paulo, where she had been staying during a trip to Brazil.
A spokesperson for the luxury hotel confirmed her death in a statement.
“Since the incident, the hotel has provided full collaboration with the competent authorities, promptly providing all the information requested to assist in the investigation,” the statement reads.
The hotel is not commenting any further out of “respect for the privacy of the guest, their family members, and the work of the responsible authorities.”
Local authorities have opened a “suspicious death” investigation, and an official cause of death has not yet been released.
A man identifying himself as Helphenstein’s plastic surgeon went to check on her after being unable to reach her by phone. Hotel staff entered the room and found her unconscious, prompting an emergency response in which she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Helphenstein had been in São Paulo for about three weeks and was reportedly undergoing or recovering from a cosmetic procedure at the time of her death.
Authorities also confirmed that forensic examinations have been requested as part of the inquiry, and the case has been formally registered by local police as suspicious while investigators work to determine what happened.
Helphenstein rose to prominence in 2018 after launching the anonymous Instagram account “Jerry Gogosian,” which quickly gained traction for its sharp, humorous critiques of the contemporary art market.
Her identity was publicly revealed in 2020, after which she expanded her work into curatorial projects, including a digital exhibition, as well as a podcast titled “Art Smack” and a Substack newsletter covering art and culture.
