Visual art pieces throughout Coeur d’Alene reflect and embody the area’s spirit.

Mudgy and Millie, The Guardians of the Lake and Sid the Green Energy Dragon are a few of these art pieces that dot the streets and sidewalks.

Now, the city is looking to invest $15,000 into the desire for local art that brought these pieces about.

On Tuesday, Coeur d’Alene City Council approved the launch of “Arts Spotlight: Visual Arts,” a brand-new community arts grant program designed to support visual arts projects, education and creative engagement.

“This program invests in community identity, economic vitality, cultural tourism and quality of life in Coeur d’Alene,” said Duncan Menzies, a member of the art commission, in a prepared statement.

The program aims to provide funding for artists, nonprofits, schools and groups that present accessible visual arts programs that benefit the community.

Exhibitions, workshops and public art initiatives are among the eligible projects. The program also prioritizes creative projects that engage young people in the arts.

Councilmember Christie Wood voiced her support for the program.

“Artistic expression is out there for everything,” she said, “I support what you are doing, I think we should support all different forms of art.”

The Art Spotlight: Visual Arts program is modeled after the Art Spotlight: Performing Arts program, but is distinct. The performing arts program requires a human performance, while the visual arts can include paintings, sculptures and more.

“The Art Commission is excited to expand opportunities for visual arts programming in our community,” said Mary Lee Ryba, in a press release, “This program creates a transparent and competitive process that supports meaningful art experiences for our residents.”

The 2026-2027 program cycle will provide $15,000 in grant funding through awards of $5,000 or $7,500, with possible second-year support for selected projects.

Applications are available at www.cdaid.org/arts and are due by July 10.
