Via social media, James Gunn has revealed the warsuit costume Nicholas Hoult will wear as Lex Luthor in next year’s Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow.

Originally designed by the late George Pérez for the Kenner Super Powers toy line in the 1980s, Lex Luthor’s green-and-purple power armor was ported over to the comics in 1983’s Action Comics #544, and has become a mainstay for the character ever since. The warsuit was previously portrayed in live-action on the TV shows Supergirl and Superman & Lois, but this will mark its first big screen appearance. It was previously teased in artwork for the film when it was first announced.
The suit’s final film design harks back to its first comics appearance by giving it a protective dome for Luthor’s head, as opposed to the tall, protective collar it’s often only portrayed as having. Overall, the silhouette of the helmet is surprisingly similar to that of Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story films. It also appears to be much more green than purple, although it is hard to know for certain with the lighting.
Man of Tomorrow, due out on July 9, 2027 release, will see Hoult’s Luthor team up with David Corenswet‘s Superman against the evil alien cyborg Brainiac (Lars Eidinger). Other additions will include Adria Arjona as Maxima, Aaron Pierre as the Green Lantern John Stewart, and Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard & Sinqua Walls in undisclosed roles. Milly Alcock, Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Nathon Fillion, María Gabriela de Faría, Frank Grillo, and Stephen Blackehart are also set to return in the film.
In the meantime, Alcock and Corenswet will reprise their roles in the new Supergirl film, out June 26. Hoult has already reappeared as Luthor on season two of Peacemaker, and Pierre will debut as Stewart on HBO’s Lanterns series, premiering August 16.
