We last got to talk about the Fushigi Yugi anime series back in 2021 when it was expiring from the RetroCrush service for streaming. The latest update is focused on the Japanese side, however, as Bandai Namco has now scheduled a complete-ish Blu-ray box set for the property. Set for an August 26th, 2026, debut, it’ll be priced at 30,000 yen and include the 52-episode series and the nine OVAs, excluding Eikoden. It’ll be a four-disc set that’s listed as being in 1080i, going by the initial details.
There’ll be 50 minutes of extras with:
• Music video collection (16 songs total)
• Non-credit opening
• “Fushigi Yugi Otsukare Ian Bus Trip ~ Forbidden Onna Makoto Onsen Arc” Parts 1-3
• “Fushigi Itazura” Parts 1-6 (Short parodies of each chapter full of gags)
• “Kokoro Shuku, Pull Yourself Together!”
It’ll come with a slipcase featuring an original illustration by Yuu Watase and a digipak featuring an original illustration by Studio Pierrot.
Media Blasters brought out the TV series on DVD in early 2015 again in North America. The show was originally licensed and released by Pioneer back at the dawn of the DVD era.
Based on the manga by Yuu Watase, the series was directed by Hajime Kamegaki based on the series composition by Yoshio Urasawa. Hideyuki Motohashi handled the character designs and it was animated by studio Pierrot.

Plot concept: Miaka, a junior high school student in Tokyo, has normal problems: fights with her mom, entrance exams, and deciding where she’s going to go eat with her friends. Then, she finds a mysterious book in the library, The Universe of the Four Gods, and her life is changed forever when she and her friend Yui are transported inside it!
Upon arriving in this new universe, the girls are immediately attacked by would-be slavers. Lucky for them, a dashing young man happens to be around! Saved from the would-be slavers, both girls are enthralled with him, but all he’s really after is money! When Miaka isn’t looking, both Tamahome and Yui vanish. Could he have kidnapped her to sell her for money? Unbeknownst to Miaka, Yui has been sucked back into the real world. Back in the library, all she can do is read on as her childhood friend sets out for the city to find the mysterious young man.
But what awaits for Miaka isn’t what either of the girls expect – and now Miaka’s only way back to her world is to become the Priestess of Suzaku and save their world.
