Variety shares that the series finale of The Boys will be screened in 4DX theaters across North America on Tuesday, May 19 (the day before the episode is released on Prime Video). The official announcement reads, “Feel every deafening blast and shocking twist as blood, guts and gore are amplified by this total sensory experience. Some moments are too big to experience from your couch. This isn’t just the finale, it’s the bloody big screen.”
For those unfamiliar, 4DX theaters add practical effects to the viewing experience, including motion seats, wind, water, and more, essentially turning films into theme park rides. It won’t mark the first time a TV show has been screened in 4DX (Lucha Underground was the first US TV show to do so), but it appears The Boys will become the first TV drama to use the format. Screenings of the finale will take place at 9:30 pm ET, and you can reserve seats with vouchers that are redeemable on the day of the screenings via the official 4DX website.
The announcement comes in the wake of theatrical screenings for other streaming shows like Stranger Things, the live-action One Piece, and The Pitt. Prior to this, The Boys had expanded to spin-offs, like the recently canceled Gen V; video games, including the newly released standalone VR title Trigger Warning; and to audio, with the Deep-centric Audible special Deeper and Deeper.
Based on the 2006-12 comic series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys premiered in 2019, and ran for five seasons, that will each ultimately consist of eight episodes. Episode seven of the final season will be released on Wednesday, May 13, while the sixth is available now. A prequel, Vought Rising, will premiere next year, and another spin-off, The Boys: Mexico, is currently in development, with Gael García Bernal attached to star.
