Last year, we got to talk about how Square Enix had picked up the Always A Catch! manga for print and digital release. The light novel series it comes from is by writer Mayo Momoyo and artist Itsumi Mito, which is known originally as Nigashita Sakana wa Ookikatta ga, Tsuriageta Sakana ga Ookisugita Ken, which is translated as The Fish I Missed Was Big, but I Caught Another Fish Was Too Big.
In November 2025, an anime adaptation was announced with plans for a spring 2026 debut. The production previously set an April 1st, 2026, premiere date. With the show underway, the production has now brought out its first preview of the 6th episode ahead of its May 6th, 2026, release.
Akira Oguro is directing it from the series composition by Michiko Yokote. Isamu Suzuki is handling the character designs with TROYCA on the animation production.
The Japanese cast includes:
- Yu Serizawa as Maria Annovazzi
- Atsushi Tamaru as Renato di Rubini
- Saori Hayami as Aida Ametis
- Shuichiro Umeda as Placido di Rubini
- Taku Yashiro as Raimondo Cigata
- Natsuki Hanae as Ireneo
- Kaori Maeda as Eleonora Casciari
- Rumi Ōkubo as Rosalia Pinotti
The series features the opening theme song “Shikai wa Kyun to” as performed by HoneyWorks feat. Airi Suzuki, and the ending theme song “DEAD OR ALIVE” as performed by Yoshino.

Plot Concept: Maria, the daughter of a duke, grew up believing she would one day inherit her father’s dukedom. Accordingly, she focused her attentions on honing her martial arts prowess, while thoughts of marriage fell by the wayside. But the arrival of a baby brother in her family means she’s losing her role as heir! Now that she’s decided it’s time to marry after all, she’s arrived a little late to the game! Are there even any eligible bachelors left?
Upon going to study abroad in a neighboring country where she might still stand a chance at getting hitched, she’s bewildered when the crown prince there declares before all that his engagement to her is null and void! Wait…what engagement?! Apparently, he’s mistaken her for the wrong girl! But once that’s all cleared up and he catches sight of her knocking out a whole pack of bandits, it turns out that this prince may have a thing for ass-kicking young ladies after all…
