2025 marked the 25th anniversary of Ai Yazawa‘s Nana, a big year for fans, and 2026, the anniversary of the manga’s live-action film adaptation, is capitalizing on that excitement. Both the 2005 and 2006 live-action film adaptations of the elusive mangaka’s beloved punk rock series are getting the Blu-ray treatment in the West for the first time — and Japan is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the original with a limited theatrical revival.
Discotek Media has announced a newly remastered Blu-ray re-release of Nana and Nana 2, giving each film its own release. The films previously received DVD releases in the US, but this marks their first Blu-ray releases. Both discs are priced at $24.95 and are slated for release on June 30, 2026. Extras are still to be announced.
One of the bestselling manga of all time, the original Nana follows two young women who share the same name and little else: Nana “Hachi” Komatsu, who moves to Tokyo chasing romance, and Nana Osaki, who’s a punk rock vocalist chasing a record deal. Despite their differences, they become best friends as they navigate dreams, heartbreak, and life in the big city. 
As Comics Beat previously covered, the manga and its on-screen adaptations are known for their iconic punk and post-punk fashions, inspired by the ethos of fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, such as tartan prints, corsets, safety pins, and platform boots. Inspired by her fashion school education, her works use fashion to tell stories that mirror the inner worlds of her characters.
The film stars J-Pop icon Mika Nakashima (Resident Evil: Retribution) as Nana Osaki and actress Aoi Miyazaki (5 Centimeters per Second) as Nana Komatsu, and features a supporting cast that includes Hiroki Narimiya (Gokusen), Ken’ichi Matsuyama (Death Note), Yuta Hiraoka (Swing Girls), Tomomi Maruyama (If She Calls That Love Too), Tetsuji Tamayama (Tokyo Love Cinema), Ryuhei Matsuda, and pop singer Yuna Ito as Reira Serizawa. It was directed by Kentaro Otani (Black Butler), with an original theme by L’Arc-en-Ciel’s HYDE. The theme song, “Glamorous Sky,” features lyrics written by Yazawa herself, deepening the connection between the manga and its cinematic adaptation.
Meanwhile, in Japan, Niew Media reports that the first film is returning to theaters for a limited revival screening in a newly remastered digital format, marking the first time it’s being presented digitally. Screenings begin July 11, 2026, at White Cine Quint in Shibuya, Tokyo, to mark the film’s 20th anniversary.
