Hopefully, you’ve already had the chance to read Daniel Warren Johnson‘s Eisner Award-winning comic Do a Powerbomb. But just in case you haven’t, this summer will afford you the perfect opportunity… and if you have, you’ll have the chance to experience the instant-classic comic in a brand new way! That’s because in July 2026, Do a Powerbomb Black and White Edition will be released by Image Comics.
Do a Powerbomb Black and White Edition
Here’s the original description of Do A Powerbomb from the publisher, which was described as “The Wrestler meets Dragonball Z“:
“Do a Powerbomb follows Lona Steelrose who wants to be a pro wrestler, but lives in the shadow of her mother’s success before her. But everything changes when a wrestling-obsessed necromancer asks Lona to join the grandest—and the most dangerous—pro wrestling tournament of all time!
In a Turnbuckle Beatdown review of the original series, Comics Beat editor Ricky Serrano Denis wrote, “Johnson was born to make wrestling comics.” And in her review of the original series Trade Paperback (TPB) collection, The Beat contributor Lisa Gullickson (Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast) wrote:
“Johnson has me questioning the entire function of outcomes, like, do they even matter? The fundamental delusion may be the satisfaction of knowing who the winners and losers are. I know the end of this comic book, but I do not want to spoil it for you other than to tell you that it will utterly subvert your expectations and invite you to question everything.”
Coming This July
As noted by the press release, Do a Powerbomb Black and White Edition will emphasize Johnson’s impressive line work. In a quote included in the press release, Johnson stated,
“Do A Powerbomb was the essence of a labor of love, and it all started with simple pen and ink. I’m proud to present this story in its very first iteration, in full black and white. What an honor to have this book back on the stands!”
The first of three Do a Powerbomb Black and White Edition issues will arrive at your Local Comic Shop (LCS) and/or public library beginning on July 8th, 2026. Will you be picking up a copy? Be sure and let The Beat know, either here in the comment section or over on our social media page.
