Netflix is reportedly stepping away from one of its ambitious fantasy plans. A new report claims its long-developing adaptation of a beloved book series is no longer moving forward, leaving fans with more questions than answers.
New report says Netflix has scrapped movie and TV adaptations of Redwall books
According to reports, Netflix has let its rights deal expire, effectively ending plans to adapt Redwall into both films and a TV series, BroadcastNow reported. The project was first announced in 2021 and aimed to bring Brian Jacques’ 22 books to screen in a connected format (via ScreenRant).
At the time, the deal with Penguin Random House was seen as a big move. It gave Netflix full control of the franchise’s adaptation rights for the first time. The plan included an animated movie based on the first novel and a limited series focused on Martin the Warrior, one of the saga’s most important characters.
This decision appears to be part of a larger strategy shift. Netflix had been building a lineup of family-friendly fantasy titles, including projects tied to The Chronicles of Narnia and works by Roald Dahl. While those are still moving ahead, the Redwall project seems to have quietly fallen off the slate. Notably, director Greta Gerwig’s new Narnia film is still expected to be released soon.
For fans, the news stings because of what Redwall represents. The series, which began in 1986, built a loyal following with its rich world of heroic woodland creatures, detailed storytelling, and emotional arcs. Readers connected with its themes of courage, community, and adventure, making it a strong candidate for adaptation.
But there is still some uncertainty, as neither Netflix nor the publisher has officially confirmed the cancellation. That leaves a small window open for hope. Another studio could step in and revive the idea, especially given the franchise’s long-standing popularity.
