The third movie in George Romero’s iconic Dead Trilogy, Day of the Dead, is getting a new 4K restoration collector’s edition courtesy of Scream Factory, and it’s armed to the teeth with extras. It comes in four discs and includes a bunch of lobby cards showcasing some of the film’s most popular shots, all in celebration of the movie’s 40th anniversary.
It all comes inside a rigid slipcase with original cover art, sporting the color palette that’s become signature of the story. It’s now up for preorder on Gruv and Amazon. It releases on June 16th, 2026.
Day of the Dead has gotten a lot of love from physical media in recent years, with multiple versions of the movie already available and easy to find. This latest edition, though, stands to be the definitive version of it. The restoration comes straight from the interpositive, which is a high-quality positive print of the movie from the original camera negative. It’s essentially a master copy, the fountain of youth for films.
As far as extras go, Scream Factory has dug deep into archival footage to produce featurettes that reveal even more about the creative process behind the scenes. Fans will be happy to see one such featurette dedicated to Tom Savini’s special make-up effects, which remain some of the best in zombie filmmaking. Interviews and TV spots abound as well.

Romero’s third Dead film focuses on a group of scientists and military men that are still holding on to their duties (just barely) in an underground facility. It deals with cold bureaucracy and scientific delusion at a time when realistic solutions to large scale problems are far beyond reach. To complicate matters, the soldiers (led by Captain Rhodes) are at their wits’ end with the scientists and are threatening to shut down this last attempt at saving humanity for good.
Hopes for a reversal of the zombie problem keep everyone focused on their tasks, but a lack of progress makes the project harder and harder to justify. And even if a solution is found, who are these people saving the world for? Romero puts his character in a world that is seemingly devoid of life save for the few in the facility, putting the very concept of existence under the microscope.
Despite being the most gory and gruesome of the three, Day of the Dead might also be the most hopeful one. Things get ugly, pushed to the brink of self-annihilation in the worst ways. But there’s a question posed at one point in the movie that sticks: how should we spend the time we have left at the end of the world?
Scream Factory is offering fans and newcomers alike the chance to answer that question in glorious 4K. If you’re interested, act fast. This one’s sure to become a hard find after it comes out.
