Binghamton University honors award‑winning author and journalist M. Gessen with the Nadia Rubaii Memorial Award at this year’s Frontiers of Prevention Conference.
Gessen is a New York Times opinion columnist, a National Book Award winner, and the author of eleven books examining authoritarianism, democracy, and human rights.
Following the award presentation, Gessen delivered a public lecture titled “What a Dissident Sees”, detailing some things he’s experienced in his life.
The Nadia Rubaii Award is named after the co-founder of the Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention at Binghamton University.
Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at Binghamton University, Donald E. Hall, says, “The institute trains faculty fellows over 200 to date from over 100 different institutions and 30 different countries around the world. So the work of this institute has gone out into the world, has succeeded other activities everywhere, and that is what is really important. But this is generative. It’s not just about the academics or about studying things.”
