A GoFundMe page has been launched for artist Tom Tenney (Force Works) and his family. Tenney lives with advanced COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a long-term lung condition that makes it difficult to breathe), and recently lost his home in Florida, forcing him and his family to sleep in friends’ houses or their car. His partner is diabetic, and a full-time carer for her autistic daughter.

Tenney states, “Trying to manage advanced COPD — needing medication, oxygen support, the ability to rest — while living in a car has been terrifying. I can’t even walk 10 yards without the need of oxygen and medications. And we can’t even afford daily food. All of it is dangerous for someone in my condition. It’s dangerous for any family, especially for us right now.”

He adds, “I wish I didn’t have to write this. I wish pride or strength mattered more than survival. I wish there was an easy answer, and we cannot do this alone. If you can donate — anything — to help us and keep air in my lungs. If you cannot donate, please share this. Visibility could save my life. Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring. And thank you for giving us a chance to survive this.”

As well as Marvel’s Force Works (1994), Tenney’s credits include NOW Comics’ original Terminator run from 1988, Robotech, 1994’s DC Showcase, L.E.G.I.O.N., Youngblood, Image’s Chapel, and Nightwatch. A protégé of legendary Marvel artist Gene Colan, his work also includes the cover illustration for AC/DC‘s 1995 album Ballbreaker, and art on Shudder’s Creepshow series. You can learn more about his work in a 2019 Comics Journal retrospective by Michel Fiffe, and a 2020 interview with The Short Box Podcast.

At the time of writing, the GoFundMe has raised $3,580 of its $5,000 goal.
