Daredevil: Born Again season two may not have finished yet, but filming is already underway on the third season, and as shared by Variety, Entertainment Weekly, and more, pictures posted to Getty Images have revealed two returning faces for the next season. Since the information disclosed by the photographs have not been officially announced by Disney and Marvel Television, we will discuss them, but only after a big spoiler warning.
The photos reveal the return of Mike Colter and Finn Jones as Luke Cage and Iron Fist/Danny Rand. The pair, who first teamed up with Charlie Cox‘s Daredevil on Netflix’s 2017 miniseries The Defenders, were snapped on location in Brooklyn with Jessica Jones actress Krysten Ritter, wearing robes to conceal their costumes, and Colter was also photographed separately in an alleyway with crew and a double. Selfies with the actors were subsequently posted by the Instagram user HadoSensei.
Colter, 49, was introduced as the MCU’s Luke Cage on the first season of Jessica Jones in 2015, and subsequently starred on the character’s 2016-18 solo series, as well as The Defenders, before making his last appearance as the character on the series finale of Jessica’s series in 2019. When we last saw Luke, he had inherited the crime syndicate controlled by Alfre Woodard‘s Mariah Dillard, but whether he still is the lord of Harlem’s underworld remains to be seen.
Finn Jones, 38, debuted on the Iron Fist series, which ran for two seasons from 2017 to 2018, and as well as The Defenders, guest starred on season two of Luke Cage. During the second season of his show, Danny lost his chi energy powers, but managed to recover and transfer them to his love interest, Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick), before gaining the ability to use them with firearms. Whether Born Again chooses to acknowledge all that similarly remains to be seen.
Jones’s return comes at an interesting time for the Iron Fist character(s), given how during the interim, Marvel Comics seemingly responded to criticism that Danny’s ethnicity made him culturally appropriative, by killing him off (and subsequently resurrecting him as the Ghost Fist), while introducing an Asian holder of the mantle, Lin Lie (who is the Iron Fist in the hit video game Marvel Rivals.) Given how the MCU now has more Asian heroes, like Simu Liu‘s Shang-Chi, and become more diverse in general, it’s possible Marvel decided Jones’s presence would be less controversial now than it was in 2016.
Daredevil: Born Again season two, which will bring back Ritter as Jessica first, is currently releasing every Tuesday night on Disney+, and will be followed by the Punisher special One Last Kill on May 12. Season three will premiere next year. In the meantime, you can check out the photos of Colter and Jones at Getty, and rewatch their previous appearances in the MCU on the streaming service.
