Dark Horse Comics and Marvel’s latest collaboration will be Marvel’s Mightiest Monsters, a 416-page book featuring classic monster stories by seminal Marvel creators like Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Larry Lieber, and Steve Ditko. Edited by John Lind and Chris Ryall, the book will present the first appearances of creatures like Groot, Fin Fang Foom, Monsteroso, and Xemnu, many of whom went on to be incorporated into the more superhero-centric Marvel Universe.

Ryall states, “These monster comics predate the creation of the Marvel Universe, but in so many ways, these stories by Lee, Kirby, and Ditko helped establish the blueprint of larger-than-life characters brought to stunning visual life by three of the best creators to ever do it.” Lind adds, “We’re excited to give the deluxe collection treatment to these classic Marvel ’50s era monsters — showcasing an impact and influence that still resonate across the kaiju comics of today.”
As well as the early work of Kirby et al., the book will include later comics by Chris Claremont, Sal Buscema, John Byrne, Gil Kane, Eric Powell, Tradd Moore, and Arthur Adams; essays from comics historians; and original art by Kirby. Ian Chalgren designed the wraparound cover, which weaves together original art of the monsters under a die-cut belly band.
Marvel’s Mightiest Monsters will be released in time for Halloween on October 13, and retail for $75. In the meantime, The Art of The Mighty Thor, celebrating Kirby and Walt Simonson‘s runs on the title, will be released on June 9, and the Marvel Universe Gallery: 1990-1994 Trading Card Collection will follow on September 8.
