The 12th annual Boone County Senior Services Inc. Art and Photography Contest will be held in celebration of Older Americans’ Month.
The annual month of recognition started in 1963 and takes place each May. BCSSI shines the spotlight on the creativity of older adults throughout the county.
Residents aged 60 and older can submit artwork across two categories and divisions: amateur or advanced painting and natural or computer-enhanced photography.
An amateur artist is defined in contest rules as an artist with limited or no training and/or who’s painted for less than eight years. Advanced artists are considered to have considerable training or have been painting for at least eight years and/or have sold their work for profit.
If the quality of a painting is considered by judges to display more advanced technique, it may be moved up to the advanced category.
BCSSI emphasizes that all photos are eligible regardless of skill level or whether they were taken on a camera or cell phone.
First, second and third place may be awarded in each category as well as best of show at the discretion of the judges.
No entry-fee or pre-registration are required to participate, but only one piece may be submitted per artist.
Work created prior to 2023 is not eligible. Art can be submitted 1:30-3:30 p.m. April 20 at the Lebanon Public Library. Submissions will be judged and hung April 21.
Results will be shared in the afternoon during an exhibition-opening for artists and their friends and family 2:30-4 p.m.
Artwork will be on display in the library April 22-May 27, and work must be picked up noon-1:30 p.m. May 28, otherwise it will be returned to BCSSI.
Those who’d like to include a one-page artist bio should submit it with their art on April 20 to be displayed alongside it during the exhibition.
