The sixth book in the Harry Potter illustrated collection is releasing this October and the official cover artwork was finally unveiled last week. Alongside the new cover, we got our first look at some of the hauntingly beautiful images sprinkled throughout the book from the new illustrator: Levi Pinfold.
New Cover and Preorder Price Drop
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: The Illustrated Edition

The preview images showcase the darker style of the artwork overall, but it’s the new cover that really sets the tone for Half-Blood Prince. You’ve got a haggard Dumbledore on his deathbed wielding an immense bit of magic in a room full of zombies. Everyone who has read the books or watched the movies will instantly recognize this scene and what comes after.
Alongside the new cover reveal, Amazon has dropped the price of preorders for the book by $5 for the first time since preorders went live.
Preview Illustrations Revealed
If you want a better look at what to expect, Bloomsbury Publishing just recently posted lightly animated versions of these images to its Instagram page that are worth checking out.
For those who are already familiar with the Harry Potter illustrated books, this new interpretation of the wizarding world may seem a bit jarring. Jim Kay was the illustrator for the first five books in the series before stepping away from the project back in 2022 and his work had an entirely different tone. Kay’s illustrations were sometimes a little bit dark, but they also had just enough whimsy interspersed throughout to help keep it light. Based on these preview images of Levi Pinfold’s work, the Half-Blood Prince is going to look a lot more grim.
Personally, I think the new style fits the sudden turn the story takes in book six. At this point Harry has watched both friends and family die and Voldemort and his Death Eaters are now fully free to wreak havoc on the world. Harry, Hermione, and Ron are all still attending classes and going about their lives, but there’s a heaviness that hangs over everyone now. The Half-Blood Prince is the book that really starts to feel more like an adult fantasy novel and this art style really seems to reflect that.
